Man gets life in prison for killing Columbus SWAT officer

The man who killed a Columbus SWAT officer has been sentenced to life in prison. Lincoln Rutledge, 45, will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 66 years by Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Mark Serrott for killing SWAT Officer Steven Smith.

Rutledge was convicted of:

  • aggravated murder
  • two counts of attempted murder
  • four counts of felonious assault
  • eight gun specifications
  • one count of aggravated arson

Rutledge set his estranged wife’s house on fire in April 2016. The SWAT team showed up to arrest him but Rutledge wouldn’t cooperate. The SWAT officers were facing off with Rutledge at his apartment on W California Ave. and High St. when Rutledge fired shots. One hit Officer Smith in the head, killing him two days later.
