May 30, 9:33 a.m. A search and rescue for a man that went missing while kayaking on Alum Creek yesterday has turned into a search and recovery mission. The 40-year-old man, whose name has not yet been released, went missing under the water south of Routes 37/36 bridge.

He and a woman were out on the water Memorial Day when the woman had a moment of struggle. He came to help her about 20 yards from the west shore. She them began paddling to shore. The man lost his paddle somewhere in the shuffle so he got out of his kayak to swim to retrieve it. He wasn’t wearing a life jacket but reportedly knew how to swim.

When she got to the shore, she couldn’t see him. Authorities say he was yelling for help but she couldn’t hear him.

The woman didn’t have a phone with her so it took her a little while to call for help.

The water in the area is about 6′ deep although a bit further out, it drops to between 16′ and 20′ deep.
