Today is Columbus, Ohio’s 205th Birthday

Today marks the 205th birth of Columbus as a place.

We’re giving away a $25 gift card to commemorate such a big birthday.

While you wait to win, here is a little history lesson — Ohio achieved statehood in 1803, Columbus did not exist. In an effort to pick a capital, the state legislature needed a new capital — they chose Columbus because of its central location and proximity to major transportation routes, beating out other competitors, including Franklinton, Dublin, Worthington, and Delaware.

Prior to the state legislature’s decision in 1812, Columbus did not exist and because of that our city was designed to be the state capital. The capital city was founded on February 14, 1812, on the “High Banks opposite Franklinton at the Forks of the Scioto most known as Wolf’s Ridge.”

So, we’re 205 years old—how should we celebrate?
