Police body cam footage of officer-involved shooting released

Columbus Police have released body cam footage of a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened in Franklinton Friday.

Kareem Jones, 30, was shot by officers during a scuffle and died three days later from the gunshot wounds. Officer Samuel James was wearing a body cam during the confrontation but audio wasn’t captured until after the shots.

Warning: Disturbing language and imagery.

Mayor Ginther’s office released a statement regarding the footage:

“The body worn camera video released today is a graphic reminder of the dangers police officers face every day, and illustrates the split-second decisions officers must make to keep Columbus neighborhoods safe. Any loss of life is tragic. We feel for the friends and family left behind, and for the officers who will forever be impacted. Body worn cameras, however, can help provide early answers to difficult questions, and aid the thorough investigation that follows. They are an important tool that will help protect officers, the public and the public’s trust. “

Police showed up to the area of Shultz Ave. in Franklinton on Friday and noticed a man walking between cars, acting erratic. Cops say they felt threatened by the man’s behavior. Police bullets were eventually fired when the man’s behavior escalated and he refused to follow commands to put his hands on his head and get on the ground.
Police said a handgun was found at the scene–a 9 millimeter Glock that was reported stolen in Vandalia, Ohio.
The officers involved are Samuel James and Marc Johnson.
