ECOT claims they didn’t fund TV ad bashing Ohio

Recently, a television ad aired, attacking Ohio’s effort to make Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow (one of the nation’s largest online charter schools) repay $60 million. State Auditor Dave Yost warned them that taxpayer dollars are not to be used for advertising like this but rather for education. ECOT has piped up and said they did not provide funding for the commercial though a report from The Columbus Dispatch cites an ECOT spokesperson saying the online school did in fact use taxpayer dollars to fund the commercial.

“We have conflicting information from ECOT about the source of funding for the ads. We do not know what the source is, but we intend to get to the bottom of it,” said Yost in a statement.

The ad stopped airing Thursday.

This whole legal battle between Ohio and ECOT has been going on for over a month now. It’s rooted in how officials tallied student log-ins to determine funding. The state says the school didn’t have proper documentations to justify the $60 million in question.
