In a move to break stereotypes and embrace their home culture, Liang Xia and Chao Song co-founded Little Sky Stone in Columbus.
Though their business is just a year and half old, it serves as a way to preserve an ancient Chinese jewelry and silver making skill that is held by just two Miao artists, Lingli Yang and Song Long, back in China. The skills used to make Little Sky Stone’s jewelry reach back through many generations and can rarely be found in the U.S.
Xia and Song were inspired to start their business by Columbus’ love of handmade and local goods. They wanted to show the world that this same value can be found in China, where stereotypes can lead consumers to believe that the only goods coming out of China are mass produced and low quality.
“The consequence of (mass production) they kind of push out a lot of the traditional jewelry makers in China. Here people like to support small business and we thought, ‘we should do something to help those artists back home,'” said Xia.
Little Sky Stone Jewelry is designed by Xia himself, some of which is inspired by his Ohio home, and the business is managed from the financial side by Song.
