Sen. Sherrod Brown Back Elizabeth Warren in Senate Controversy
The U.S. Senate is headed to confirm Sen. Jeff Sessions as the new attorney general after a controversial decision to put Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren in violation of Senate rules.
Warren was told she’d broke rule 19 by reading a 30 yr. old letter from Coretta Scott King that challenged Sessions on his record in regards to race.
The 1986 letter penned by Martin Luther King Jr.’s widow said that Sessions’ actions as a federal prosecutor were “reprehensible” using his office as “a shabby attempt to intimidate and frighten elderly black voters.” This was during a time when Sessions was being considered for a potential federal judgeship.
Democratic Senators, including Ohio Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown took to protesting the ruling made by Sen. Mitch McConnell and read the letter in Brown’s stead.
