Sounds of deadly beating mistaken for rough sex in homeless camp

In April of 2016, Cathleen “Kit Kat” Howatt was beaten to death in a homeless camp. Danny L. Johnson has been charged with her murder. He went on trial this week.

A resident of the same homeless camp thought the sounds coming from the tent that Johnson and Howatt shared were them engaging in rough sex. The resident, a neighbor named Jennifer Smith, said she heard Johnson say, “Here, take that,” during testimony on Tuesday.

The next morning, April 19, Johnson went to Smith’s fiancé saying, “Something happened to Kit Kat.”

Smith’s fiancé said that Johnson claimed someone knocked her out and killed her although he noticed Smith’s hands were swollen.

Johnson took Smith’s fiancé to a vacant tent–not the one the couple shared– where he saw Howatt’s severely beaten, dead body.

Johnson was arrested at his mother’s home in Reynoldsburg and charged with two counts of murder, one count of domestic violence, and one count of tampering with evidence.
