One of many things to love about the work of designer Todd Oldham is that a lot of it has been focused on helping others express their own creativity.

He made his name in the fashion world in the 1990s with a decade-long run of extravagant ensembles, dozens of which are on view through April 15 at the Wexner Center for the Arts in the exhibition All of Everything: Todd Oldham Fashion. Oldham’s also designed goods for the home and he’s been a major DIY advocate with his projects Hand Made Modern and Kid Made Modern.

On March 18, the Wex is having an Oldham-inspired Super Sunday event with a DIY fashion theme, pairing free open galleries with crafty activities like making messenger bags out of shipping envelopes and duct tape. For the more adventurous, local artists Madeline Conway and Dora Rodriguez will offer a uniquely thoughtful way to create your own look.

“We’re building a textile environment with raw materials that people can explore, deconstruct and reconstruct into their own wearables,” Conway explained.

“We’re not having people make anything specific but we will have info on how you can wear the supplies,” Rodriguez added. “You have to harvest the materials, barter and work together.”

“Fashion is generally relegated as something superficial, but clothing is so powerful. It’s our first line of defense,” Conway said. “We’re trying to make the outfit a tool to communicate and play with other people.”

Super Sunday: Art Studio with Madeline Conway and Dora Rodriguez starts at noon on March 18 at The Wexner Center for the Arts, 1871 N. High St. on the Ohio State campus. Admission is free for all. Hit wexarts.org or call 614-292-3535 for more info.
