Momentum University Summer Performance: The Harlem Renaissance
Momentum will join the community-wide celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance by engaging central Ohio children in dance, music, and performance.
During July 2018, 100 of Momentum’s advanced dancers will attend a two-week intensive where they will learn original dances that tell the story of the Harlem Renaissance, hear from guest speakers on the topic and design period costumes and scenery. Dancers are selected for the intensive based on their exemplary behavior, attitude, and willingness to live the Momentum big four (do my best work hard, never give up and be healthy.)
Dancers are eligible for scholarships for the intensive but must complete a personal essay to be accepted. This year’s essay prompt was “How does your culture influence how you express yourself?”
The summer intensive will culminate with a free, 30-minute performance open to the public at the John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons Stage on Thursday, July 26 at 5:30pm. This performance will serve as inspiration for the grand, hour-long spring performances given by more than 1,000 Momentum dancers at the Davidson Theatre in downtown Columbus for capacity audiences in May 2019.
