OhioDance Festival at OSU delves into history of black women
Crystal Michelle Perkins is Assistant Professor in the Department of Dance at The Ohio State University. She is also the Associate Artistic Director of Dayton Contemporary Dance Company (DCDC).
Crystal’s career began at the age of 7, in Augusta Georgia. After graduating Southern Methodist University in Dallas Texas, she auditioned for DCDC.
She knew nothing about DCDC until one day she saw them on the cover of Dance Spirit magazine. Crystal was attracted to the muscular bodies and natural hair.
She found herself.
As a DCDC company member, Crystal has performed the works of renowned choreographers, including but not limited to, Donald Byrd, Eleo Pomare, and Diannne McIntyre.
Her own work delves into the experiences of black women globally in contemporary dance. She explores questions of where we come from and what we are getting over as a society.
Her current work deals with black women wrongly incarcerated. She is also building an American folklore project. She is looking at the American south and the cultural identities that have settled over time, outside of hip hop. For example, folk in Appalachia, the Gullah people in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, and other people who have been displaced.
Her favorite music is anything sung by jazz and blues vocalist, Cassandra Wilson.
Crystal Michelle has choreographed a piece that will be performed by Dayton Contemporary Dance Company during the festival concert, Saturday, April 28th at 6:30pm.
