German Village bygone bakery replaced with dual international concept

German Village bygone bakery replaced with dual international concept

With such big shoes to fill after the abrupt closure of one of the community’s most beloved hubs, two restauranteurs are taking on the task.

Alpine and El Lugar opened a German-Spanish (respectively) joint concept Tuesday in the former location of Juergens German Bakery at 525 S 4th St., which closed in January after half a century of business.

Alpine is and upscale restaurant serving authentic, scratch-made German food like kasespatzle, leberkase, and, of course, schnitzel with German beers and specialty cocktails to wash it all down.

A buffet will operate from 10am- 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays and feature schweinbraten, reports The Dispatch.

Owners A.J. Ndreu, Enis Ndreu, and Elidon Hizmo even got the blessing of Juergens owner Rosemarie Keidel who said the place is “great,” “elegant,” and “high-class.”

The 75-seat interior has been completely remodeled with dark wood and exposed brick.

Alpine hours are 11am- 10pm Monday through Thursday, 11am- 11pm Friday, 10am- 11pm Saturday, and 10am- 3pm (brunch only) Sunday.

El Lugar and its more relaxed atmosphere will take over the lower floor.

The Dispatch reports seafood items packed in cans from Espinaler served with toothpicks, toasted rounds of crostini, Salsa Espinaler and a homemade salsa as well as homemade meals.

Sweet Spanish vermouth and Spanish wines will be offered at the bar.

Stay tuned for a patio.

El Lugar hours are 3- 11pm Sunday through Thursday and 3pm- 1am Friday and Saturday.
