PETA puts paw down against Ohio’s state dog proposal

Labradors are loyal, hard-working, lovable. Call us crazy but we think [most] Ohioans are deserving of those exact same adjectives. Republican Rep. Jeffery Rezabek of Clayton agrees and created a bill to make the breed our state dog but PETA is putting its paw down.

The national animal welfare organization opposes the bill because they believe it will encourage puppy mills to produce unhealthy numbers of labs. PETA believes our state dog should encapsulate underdogs, too, like mutts and shelter dogs.

However, a separate bill introduced last year proposed Ohio’s state pet be the shelter animal. 10TV reports the two bills will not interfere.

If Ohio does in fact appoint a state dog, it would join other states like Georgia (adoptable dog), Pennsylvania (Great Dane), and Wisconsin (American water spaniel).
