Dear I-670 commuters, we’ve got some good news and some bad news
Heads up if you’re an I-670 commuter: Work is slated to begin Wednesday night as the SmartLane project gets underway.
The good news is the project will allow eastbound drivers to use the left shoulder of I-670 between the 3rd and 4th street exits and I-270 during the rush hours from 3:30 to 6:30pm Monday- Friday, reports The Dispatch.
Overhead signs will be installed to indicate when the SmartLane is open.
The goal of this project is to relieve congestion and keep traffic moving at a steady 45mph.

Paving of the eastbound lanes will occur from 7pm- 5am and is expected to be finished by October 15.
The bad news is lanes will be closed during this time.
You’ll also notice concrete barriers separating the eastbound lanes from the shoulder—this is to protect roadside workers as they rebuild the shoulder.
The SmartLane project will also include two new ramps and bridges from eastbound I-670 to northbound I-270 to break up traffic heading north on I-270 or towards Easton Way and Route 161.
This work is also expected to be completed by October 15.
