Rat attack in two Columbus neighborhoods

Rats are on the rise on the South Side and in Clintonville and residents are repulsed.

During the first six months of 2018, The Columbus Dispatch reports the South Side — ZIP codes 43206, which includes German Village, and 43207 — had 67 service requests, compared with 27 the first six months of last year.

Those service requests translated into city health inspectors assessing 159 properties this year so far, compared to just 82 in total last year.

In Clintonville, there are 21 properties with signs of active rats in 2018. During this time last year, there were only five in the area.

The likely cause? Disturbance to their habitats during infrastructure construction, specifically construction along Parsons Avenue in the South Side and the installation of rain gardens and sewer lines in Clintonville.

The disturbances force the rats out into the neighborhood.

Homeremedyhacks.com provides some tips on how to keep rats away from your home:

  • Always keep the home and attic clean.
  • Seal all the possible entries of the rats using caulk.
  • Keep your garbage cans neat and cover them with a lid.
  • You can also own a cat.
  • Remove all the food leftovers and grease from BBQ Grills.
  • When you experience the presence of these rodents, do clean the floor with a solution of bleach and water (equal proportion) to safeguard your family from any disease.
  • Clean the standing water from flower pots and other sources.
  • Cut down tall shrubs and weeds from your garden.
