Wendy’s vs OSU tomato fight reaches cease fire

Wendy’s has finally [sort of] folded in a years-long debacle with protestors over tomatoes.

Rather than sourcing their tomatoes from Mexico—a tidbit of info that sparked years of protest by OSU students alongside Florida-based Coalition of Immokalee Workers over the treatment of Mexican tomato pickers—the Dublin-based fast food chain will begin getting their tomatoes from greenhouses in the U.S. and Canada.

“The vast majority of our tomatoes will be sourced from (about a dozen suppliers in) the United States and Canada, giving Wendy’s customers the benefit of fresh, great-tasting tomatoes from sources that match the brand’s North American restaurant footprint,” spokeswoman Heidi Schauer wrote in an email according to Columbus Business First.

CBF adds that some of the burger chain’s tomatoes will still come from Mexico.

Last March, protestors from OSU and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers congregated in Goodale Park to put pressure on Wendy’s to reform their produce sourcing practices.

Around the same time nearly 20 OSU students took part in a fast to boycott Wendy’s inhumane working conditions and wages of those who work on fruit and vegetable farms.

Does how a restaurant sources their products have any affect on your decision to patronize?
