Shake up fest season, literally, with Midwest Burlesque, Rockabilly Weekend

Laura Dachenbach

Want to shake up your festival season? Literally?

Both exotic and comedic, burlesque has a long history in the U.S., and it’s where stars (like Fanny Brice, Mae West, and Gypsy Rose Lee) have been born. But what exactly is burlesque, and what’s it doing in 2019? This weekend you can learn the answers to both questions at the Midwest Burlesque and Rockabilly Weekend from running May 30-June 2 at multiple venues including The Shrunken Head, Big Room Bar, and Axis Nightclub. And you might just find a brand-new version of you.

The weekend is devoted to celebrating burlesque, pinup, and rockabilly culture. Musical and burlesque acts will be featured, as well as contests and workshops (where you can channel your inner naughty, tease, or vintage self) where experts can tell you how to pose for photos, strut yourself on stage, or maybe just how to make some decent victory rolls.

Activities will culminate on Sunday at 400 West Rich with a family-friendly fashion show, pinup fair, shopping, and the crowning of this year’s Miss Turbo. Dirty Franks food truck and live music will round out the day of fun. Step back a few decades. Satisfy your curiosity. Eat some excellent hot dogs. Except perhaps a few articles of clothing, what have you got to lose?
