Wish Upon a Star when meteor shower hits Columbus this month

Mike Thomas

A very trustworthy cartoon cricket once told me that when you wish upon a star, your dream comes true. Fair enough, but spotting the damn things in the vastness of space can be tricky. If only there was some reliable way to predict where these elusive astronomical phenomena will appear…

As it turns out, you won’t need a crystal ball to find plenty of shooting stars this month—but a telescope probably wouldn’t hurt. Look skyward this month through early November to view the The Orionid meteor shower.

Made up from debris strewn by Halley’s Comet, this predictable shower originates in the constellation Orion, and should be visible across much of the night sky—cloud cover notwithstanding.

For the optimal viewing experience, be on the lookout in the hours just before dawn on Oct. 22. Don’t forget to make a wish!
