A former Ohio State men’s basketball standout is swapping his jersey for a white coat. Aaron Craft has announced his retirement from basketball and subsequent return to his alma mater for medical school.

Craft continued his basketball career after college with NBA’s G League (then known as the D-League) and several different clubs in the EuroLeague all while maintaining his goal of one day becoming a doctor.

“The passion for medicine is something I have cultivated since I was a child,” Craft told Italian magazine Corriere della Sera per Eleven Warriors. “At the end of my life I want to be more than a player who has chased a ball. My goal is to help others and serve the society in which I live.”

Though his basketball days may be behind him, Craft can be proud of his many athletic accolades including

  • Two-time NBA D-League All-Defensive First Team
  • NBA D-League Defensive Player of the Year in 2015 while leading his team to the league’s title
  • EuroLeague Pro A Best Defender honors
  • NABC Defensive Player of the Year (2014)
  • Second-team All-Big Ten (2013)
  • Third-team All-Big Ten (2014)
