Something Borrowed, Something You

It’s the little things. The details of an event set the tone and mood for the memories made therein. But table settings, chair covers, wreaths and tchotchkes can drive you over your budget in the blink of a bridesmaid’s eye. The answer is so simple as to be obvious: wedding re-sale. At these pop-up sale events, brides- and grooms-to-be can stitch together their whole look—from parts of someone else’s.

Two teams of Central Ohio fairy godparents have created a middle-market where the recently engaged can shop for stylish accessories and stay within their budget, and on the back end, newlyweds can get a piece of the wedding industry action. (And this month, you can hit them both in the same day!) Here they are, along with a few hints and tips for your date to remember.

Fancy Flip
fancyflipevents.com

Lisa Wilson and Leah Miller have been doing Fancy Flip events since July of 2016 and they’ve quickly grown. By the end of 2017, they had put on 37 events spanning cities in six states. At each Fancy Flip pop-up, those who have gotten married can secure themselves a booth where they’ll sell their centerpieces, wedding dresses, and other matrimonial accoutrements.

Brides-to-be buy a ticket at the door, and they can peruse the wares from their post-vow counterparts. Planning a wedding can be stressful, and the cost can be overwhelming. Wilson and Miller have aimed to (wait for it) Flip those issues on their heads with Fancy Flip. Here’s some advice they’ve picked up along the way.

  • Separate your budget into sections so you can keep tabs on how much you have to spend for each aspect, like dress, venue, decorations etc.
  • Enjoy the moment. Everything will come together even if it isn’t perfect. Honestly, the little hiccups that you may experience will probably be the things that you laugh about years later.
  • You don’t have to start at square one. The past brides that are sellers have put together their vision as a complete look. Brides-to-be can shop from lots of booths that have similar styles or themes to what they have in mind.

Savvy Bride Resale Market
columbusbrideandgroom.com

Columbus Bride and Groom offers many resources to local engaged couples, and the Savvy Bride Resale Market is one of those services. With the popularity of consignment shops, they often wondered—why was there not a wedding one? This thought led to the production of an event where brides can sell their gently used items to other brides. Thanks to Columbus Bride and Groom’s connections with other wedding industry professionals, shoppers can check out wedding vendors, taste cakes from local bakeries, and get a look at other trends as they work their way to their big day.

  • It took years for brides to realize   it was a necessity to have a planner. Much like if you are buying a home, you would go with a real estate agent.
  • There are some great used dress boutiques in the Columbus area. Some florists carry rental items, as well as some venues, so always ask what they can offer.
  • Get married during an off-season. Utilize a credit card that generate a lot of rewards/points. Sell as much as you can after your wedding! Provide passed appetizers during cocktail hour, and a specialized signature drink. Look for venues that charge a food and beverage minimum vs a rental fee.
