Electric car owners are in for a shock as new registration fee takes effect

If your New Year’s resolutions include being kinder to the environment by driving an electric or hybrid car, you could be in for a shock when it comes time to register your vehicle.

According to Cleveland.com, the higher registration fees for those eco-friendly rides that were unveiled as part of the most recent state transportation budget went into effect on January 1.

Under the new law, the fee to register a hybrid vehicle is now a cool $100. The fee for all-electric vehicle? A jolting $200.

Like the increase in the state’s gas tax (10.5 cents per gallon for conventional gas and 19 cents for diesel) the newly-increased registration fees will help pay for road and bridge construction and upkeep.
