Ohio children K-12 will be required to wear masks this upcoming school year

In a COVID-19 update on Tuesday, Gov. Mike DeWine gave further instructions on Ohio children safely returning to school.

All children K through 12 will be required to wear a mask when attending school in person this upcoming school year, as advised by Gov. DeWine, the Ohio Children’s Hospital Association, and Ohio Chapter of the Academy of Pediatrics.

By requiring a facial covering or mask, Gov. DeWine says that it’s the “best shot we have to have children in school” this year.

Exempt from the order are: children under the age of 2; children unable to remove a face covering without assistance; children with significant behavioral/psychological issues; children with a severe developmental order such as autism; and children with a facial deformity that causes airway obstruction.

Gov. DeWine also mentioned that Ohio is working with FEMA to deliver 2 million masks to schools across the state.

It was also mentioned in the update that Ohio is still not sure with how it wants to proceed with fall sports. The decision to play certain fall sports will be made closer to the start of the season to see where the current spread of COVID-19 is.

Some Ohio schools that have already gone virtual for the school year have already dismissed athletics for the fall semester.
