A “demolition drag race,” where racing vehicles collide on purpose, is coming to central Ohio

What do you get when you mix a demolition derby with drag racing?

It’s called the Hillbilly Nationals Drag Derby. We don’t know how it’s legal, but we do know it’s coming to the Columbus area this summer.

The Hillbilly Nationals Drag Derby will be held at Licking County’s National Trail Raceway on May 13. You can buy tickets here.

In this popular, touring “drag derby,” each driver’s aim is to win a race against an opposing vehicle, but it’s not that simple. Both drivers are required to hit each other at least once before the 100-foot mark, and at least twice before the ⅛ mile mark.

And you’re not likely to see any particular fast cars in the race, either, as according to the event’s official rules, cars must be worth $1,000 or less.

You can check out some races in action from last year’s central Ohio Hillbilly Nationals here to get a better feel for the event.
