Celebrate and honor the spirits of loved ones this season with these three Columbus Day of the Dead Celebrations

El Día de los Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead is a traditional Mexican holiday held Nov. 1 –2 that honors loved ones and others that have passed away. The day is typically filled with a reunion of family, celebrating with cultural food and activities. 

Whether you typically celebrate the holiday, or you’re looking to learn more about it, here are three, free, Columbus located Day of the Dead festivities that anyone can enjoy.

Wexner Center for the Arts

On November 1 from 4-8 p.m., join an all-ages Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration with Ohio State’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Latinx Studies Program, and the Wex.

Join them for reflections about our muertos; personal ofrendas (offerings or altars); a book launch for local artist Rafael Rosado; a Living Altars performance by Taco Reparations Brigade; and a comic-making station provided by local artist Anthony Pomales.

Enjoy free refreshments, including traditional pan de muertos.

Columbus Museum of Art

To celebrate the holiday, the Columbus Museum of Art is hosting there separate events to not only educate the community, but allow an open space to honor traditions. From Oct. 15 – Nov. 3, a community ofrenda will be available for the public to add their own photos and mementos to the altar. Oct. 27 will feature a community conversation on grief from 1 – 3 p.m. to promote  meaningful discussion on loss and healing. To cap the holiday, the museum will offer a day of activities, food, crafts and more on Nov. 3, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. 

OSUMC Healthy Community Center 

Hosted by the Empowering Latinas Leadership Academy, the fourth annual Dia de Los Muertos event will take place Nov. 8, 5 – 9 p.m. Featuring live performances, food, open mic poetry and more, this year will mark its first held in the OSUMC. A designated kid’s hour with facepainting and a best dressed contest will occur between 5 – 6 p.m and, while the event is free to the public, registration is encouraged.
