50-year-old Columbus restaurant named the best ‘hole-in-the-wall’ in the state

There’s a magical little deli on the corner of Mohawk and Whittier that looks straight out of a movie, complete with daily homemade sides, local sodas and chips, and desserts.

Brown Bag Delicatessen, located at 898 Mohawk St., first opened in 1974, and they’ve stayed true to their roots of cooking the best hot sandwiches around, decades later. So much so that they’ve claimed a spot as the “best hole-in-the-wall” restaurant in Ohio, according to Lovefood, an online publication that ranks restaurants across the United States based on genuine user reviews, awards and accolades, and first-hand experiences of team members.

“This cute corner deli in Columbus’ Historic German Village is considered the go-to place to satisfy sandwich cravings. People rave about Brown Bag Deli menu favorites like The Village Addiction – sourdough with smoked turkey, havarti cheese, and cranberry mayonnaise – and the sriracha-spiced Inferno. Sides like deviled eggs and potato salad laced with mustard are also delicious, as are daily specials like creamy sausage and tortellini soup,” explained Lovefood.

The menu changes every day at Brown Bag, considering the sides, soups, and desserts are handmade daily, but their signature sandwiches always remain the same. Try the #11, called The Brown Bag Sub, with smoked ham, capicola, pastrami, salami, swiss, hot pepper jack, provolone, lettuce, tomato, red onion, banana peppers, mayo, Italian dressing, all served hot or cold on a hoagie roll. Or even their vegan option, the #13 T.L.C., made with cucumber steaks, roasted tomatoes, artichoke hearts, red onion, spinach, olive tapenade, hummus; served on toasted pumpernickel. They also serve specialty salads, and their rotating sides consist of potato salads, roasted brussel sprouts, thai crunch coleslaw, plus much more.

There’s quite nothing better than sipping on a Jones Soda on the tree-lined, sidewalk patio at this German Village hole-in-the-brick-wall.
