Feds: Ex-Columbus cop admits to turning off body cam while exchanging phone numbers, having sex on duty

A former Columbus police officer pleaded guilty to destroying or altering records in a criminal investigation by removing his bodycam on two different instances.
Former Columbus police officer Nicholas Duty admitted to the crime on Jan. 23 in a federal courtroom.
In February of 2024, a witness expressed concerns about Duty’s actions in a street-level prostitution investigation on Sullivant Avenue. He was later positively identified by the witness. Further investigation into Duty revealed two incidents with women where he deactivated his body camera.

The first incident occurred on Halloween of 2023, when taking a call from a woman asking for assistance because her boyfriend was attempting to kill himself. Dairy turned off his body camera and the two exchanged phone numbers. He later reached out to her multiple times.
Additionally, investigators discovered video footage of Duty speaking with a woman near a Sunoco gas station on March 22, 2024. According to the woman, Duty asked if she wanted to go to their “normal spot.” Duty removed his body camera but it still recorded audio of the incident. He can be heard asking the woman multiple times for sex. She declines, but performs oral sex on him, and he pays her $20, according to the woman.
Duty has not yet been sentenced, but his recommended sentence according to his plea deal is 12-48 months.
