Ohio State marks Brutus Buckeye’s 50th birthday

2015 marks the 50th birthday (arguably) the most recognized mascot in all of college football…Ohio State’s own Brutus Buckeye.

Students wanting a mascot for the university created their own in 1965. He made his debut that October, walking down the Ohio Stadium entrance ramp at the Homecoming football game vs Minnesota. At the time, he was made of paper mâché and had no name. A contest after the game resulted in the name Brutus Buckeye.

The celebration began Thursday night with activities during Student Life’s Buckeye Kick-Off at the Horseshoe. In October, Brutus will serve as the grand marshal of the Homecoming parade. And in November, a special gala will be held to raise money for newly created Brutus scholarships. A special recognition is also planned for during the Minnesota game on November 7th.

Happy Birthday, Brutus!  (jj)
