Best Places in Columbus to Watch This Year’s Perseid Meteor Shower

On August 12th, the Perseid Meteors will zoom through the night sky.

2016 may be a particularly special year for the meteors, as the outburst will be double the normal rates.

“Forecasters are predicting a Perseid outburst this year with double normal rates on the night of Aug. 11-12,” Bill Cooke with NASA’s Meteoroid Environments Office told NBC4i. “Under perfect conditions, rates could soar to 200 meteors per hour.”

According to Spacedex, the best times to observe will be between the hours of 11pm and 4:30am.

So what are some of the best places to watch meteor showers? Truthfully any area where the light pollution of Downtown no longer interferes with the night sky.I’ve watched the meteor showers in past years in places like Battelle Darby area and Highbanks Metro Park. A good rule of thumb is if you’re within 10 miles of the 270 loop, it probably won’t be dark enough.

Call your metro park before venturing out, as they may not be holding events.

Many feel that the morning is the best time to catch the meteor shower, but from personal experience if it is dark enough you shouldn’t have a hard time star gazing.
