How drones could affect YOUR tax bill

Franklin County Auditor Clarence Mingo is testing a new program using drones to assess property values, which determine how much a person or business pays in property taxes.

Every six years auditors are required to visit and reappraise property values. This process can be arduous and time consuming, and sometimes incomplete, as auditors may miss new additions out of the plain view. Now using an eye in the sky, this process may become a bit less burdensome – and may reveal structures previously hidden to the tax man.

An outside drone company, Arial Image Solutions, has been commissioned to take high-resolution images of Franklin county properties. Afterwords, the images are sewn together and eventually appraised by humans who then set the properties value. These images can also be used to show potential customers a birds eye view of properties before they buy.
