Do students really need algebra II? Ohio Senate doesn’t think so
You know what they say, “another day gone by, another day I didn’t use algebra.”
The Ohio Senate agrees and has taken action to reform Ohio’s high school education system to be more applicable to modern times.
The Columbus Dispatch reports the Ohio Senate unanimously approved a bill that would give students the option to study computer sciences rather than fulfilling some math and science requirements.
Life science and biology will still be required but students could squash algebra II and/or other science courses if they’re more interested in computer science. However, if a student decided to nix algebra II, it may affect their ability to get into a university so the legislation requires schools to notify the parents.
This bill also requires the state Board of Education to get a move on with a K-12 curriculum for computer science—if the bill passes this would have to be done by the end of 2018.
Standing in the bill’s way of approval is a final check by the Senate and Governor Kasich’s OK.
