Netflix & Grill Bar Crawl: Walk down OSU memory lane with free food, drink specials

Welcome to Netflix and Grill, your online resource for planning an evening around local food and drink, music and a television show. Today we celebrate a GREAT cause while supporting local, via a diaper drive that doubles as an Alumni Bar Crawl. This is going to be a blast and if you want to have fun while making your community better, I hope you join me.

Before we get started, we will have to back up to set up the scene. Besides having this great job of blabbing my mouth for 614 Media Group, my day job is in Special Education at Columbus City Schools.

For those who have never been to a Columbus City School or aren’t familiar with urban life, let me be the first to let you know that living conditions can be more difficult than you imagine. Much more difficult.

In short, abject poverty isn’t an abstract term meant for persons from bigger cities or foreign countries—abject poverty exists right here in central Ohio. Just because you haven’t experienced it first-hand doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist.

What can you do to help your fellow neighbor? The answer is simple and meaningful—donate a box of diapers to The Columbus Diaper Bank.

If you come to the Bier Stube between 2 and 4 PM on Saturday July 14th to make your donation, you will receive a wrist band that entitles you to Happy Hour Specials from 2-8 at the following locations:

  • Bier Stube (1479 N. High)
  • The Library (2169 N. High)
  • Cazuela’s Grill (2321 N. High)
  • Hendoc’s Pub (2375 N. High)
  • Ledo’s Tavern (2608 N. High)

Pretty sweet, huh? To top it off, there will be a FREE raffle at 7:30 at Ledo’s with great grilling based prizes from Specialty Gas House, Weiland’s Market, and Sabauce.

This really is a fun opportunity to do a good deed while drinking ice cold beers and strolling down memory lane.

Sure, we all miss Larry’s, Bernie’s, Toos, The Heidleberg, Mean Mr. Mustards, and Ugly Tuna, but let’s do our best to support the great bars that are still keeping campus real.

FOOD

So what food will we pair with this event? We have THREE great options for you.

At the beginning of the afternoon, we are going to have free wings from the good people at Sabauce. The middle stop is Cazuela’s where grabbing a few tacos will help with your endurance without hurting your wallet.

At the end of the evening you can purchase a few slices from Mikey’s Late Night Slice (located directly next to Ledo’s) which is probably a good idea especially if you have to Uber your old ass back to the suburbs and relieve the babysitter.

Wings, Tacos AND Pizza? That shouldn’t be a problem because your metabolism hasn’t changed since undergrad, right?

MUSIC

ere are local albums from High Street Heroes to get you in the mood to crawl:

  • 84 Nash’s ‘Band For Hire’. This power pop opus is chock full of upbeat rock tracks and is my favorite all time Columbus album.
  • Gaunt’s ‘Yeah Me Too’. This pop/punk album is a fun ride and you may recognize the name from Gaunt guitarist Jovan Karcic’s eponymously named Clintonville Coffee Shop.
  • Tim Easton’s Alt Country masterpiece ‘Special 20’ will mellow you out and make you sign up for guitar lessons.
  • NPR, Stereogum and American Songwriter all have praise for local country pop rocker Lydia Loveless and her 2016 release Real. Check her out next time she returns to town.
  • Moviola’s East of Eden is a folky pop rock romp that is perfect for pre-crawl Saturday morning coffee.

STREAMING

What should we watch? Well, there is simply only one acceptable answer, the HBO Documentary Michigan Vs. Ohio State: The Rivalry.

Watch this the night before the crawl to get your juices flowing and remember your days in Block O. Released in 2007, The Rivalry details the history and significance of the best rivalry in sports. It is presented in a snobs vs. slobs narrative and I have never been prouder to be a slob. If you haven’t previously seen The Rivalry, you are in for a treat and like me, you may end up rewatching it annually on the Eve of the game.

So there you have it, a great way to help the most vulnerable citizens in our city, to support local and to have a great time doing so. Remember, it always helps to bring cash for these sort of events and please make sure to take care of your bartenders and wait staff! Using Uber or Lyft to get from the Stube to the bars up north (it is July after all) is a good idea and using Uber or Lyft to get back home is a GREAT idea! Do a good deed, support local and get home safely!

The Netflix and Grill Ohio State Alumni Bar Crawl begins at 2PM on Saturday 07/14 at The Bier Stube (1479 N. High) and will conclude at with a free raffle at Ledo’s (2608 N. High) at 7:30 PM. Diaper donations will be accepted between 2-4 PM.

The aforementioned albums are available at your local, friendly record store.

Michigan VS. Ohio State: The Rivalry is available to stream on HBO GO.
