Robot SAM: “I won’t be back”

The Columbus Division Of Fire’s bomb robot, or SAM as it’s known to friends, is about to be sent out to technological pasture. The bomb-diffusing robot has been in service for more than 20 years, and while Columbus will still use it as a backup, it’s time for an upgrade. The fire department received a $200,000 grant from Homeland Security to buy a new bot; one that has a better camera system and can lift heavy items. It’s expected to come in the next eight months.

And while SAM is getting ready to be second string, it’s still got a lot of respect from the city. “This has been a wonderful robot for 20 years,” said Lieutenant David Haley of the Columbus Division of Fire. (deb)
