Hilliard roundabout study reveals people don’t know how to drive

Update: An engineering firm has been studying the three roundabouts in Hilliard and discovered that the problem with roundabouts doesn’t have anything to do with the actual roundabouts but rather, with the people using them. They suggest a few remedies to the traffic designs like simplified landscape and more signage but they found the majority of issues with the roundabouts come from uneducated drivers improperly using lanes.

Here are a few standouts from the study findings:

  1. 17 and 35-year-olds are the two age groups most responsible for accidents at the Main and Cemetery roundabout (the most accident-ridden area in Hilliard).
  2. There have been no pedestrian crashes or serious injuries at any of the three roundabouts
  3. The engineering firm suggests Hilliard create large scale model of a roundabout to be laid on the ground for people to practice correctly maneuvering a roundabout (see photo below)

10/03/2017: For the past six months, an engineering firm has been studying three roundabouts in Hilliard to determine their strengths, weaknesses, and ways they could be improved. This afternoon, those results will be revealed.

The three roundabouts in question are:

  • Main Street and Scioto Darby Road
  • Main and Cemetery Road
  • Britton Parkway and Davidson Road

The city decided to go ahead with the study because a 2016 report from the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission showed that the roundabout at Main and Cemetery had the most accidents in Hilliard from 2013 to 2015 (233)

If you want to be among the first to get the scoop on the dizzying traffic designs, there will be a public meeting held tonight at the Phyllis A. Ernst Senior Center, 3810 Veterans Memorial Drive from 5- 7pm.
