Ohio Sports Weekend Recap: Buckeyes still tops in the nation
The Buckeyes, the NFL, the NHL, the MLS, MLB and the Columbus Clippers. There was a lot of action going on over the weekend. Let’s check out the recap.
Buckeyes
Despite what I’m calling a ‘shaky’ 20 – 13 win over Northern Illinois, Ohio State maintains its grip on the #1 spot in the latest polls. The Buckeyes earned forty 1st place votes in this week’s AP Poll (18 fewer than last week). A look at the top five:
- Ohio State
- Michigan State
- (tie) Mississippi
- (tie) TCU
- Baylor
Bengals
Three touchdown passes from Andy Dalton was the story here as the Bengals defeated the Chargers, 24 – 19. Cincinnati improves to 2 – 0. San Diego falls even at 1 – 1.
Browns
Johnny Manziel was good for a pair of touchdown passes on Sunday in the Browns’ 28 – 14 win over the Titans. Cleveland goes to 1 – 1. Tennessee drops to 1 – 1.
Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets have their first pre-season game Monday night. The club hosts the Pittsburgh Penguins at Nationwide Arena with a 7pm puck drop.
Columbus Crew SC
Ethan Finlay and Kel Kamara both found the back of the net for Columbus as the Crew SC topped D.C. United 2 – 1. The win was Columbus’ fourth consecutive victory on the road. Columbus is in second place in the Eastern Conference, 1 point behind the New York Red Bulls.
Cleveland Indians
The Cleveland Indians took two of three from the Chicago White Sox.
Cincinnati Reds
The Cincinnati Reds took two of three from the Milwaukee Brewers.
Clippers
With a Game 5 win Saturday night in Indianapolis, the Columbus Clippers claimed this year’s Governors’ Cup. Congratulations, Clippers!
