Bicyclist seriously injured, struck by truck while training for Pelotonia

Authorities are searching for the driver that struck a 48 year-old Pickerington bicyclist as he was training for the upcoming Pelotonia charity ride.

Brian White was preparing to ride a 100-mile journey from Columbus to Gambier as part of this weekend’s cancer research fundraiser. In doing so, he was pedaling a popular route late last week in Licking County when he was struck from behind by a pickup truck. The truck is estimated to have hit Brian at approximately 55mph, throwing him into a nearby field. The person that hit Brian failed to stop and simply drove away.

Brian was later taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center where doctors discovered that his injuries included two broken legs and a broken arm.

The State Highway Patrol believes that the truck that hit the Pickerington man was a 2004 to 2009 Ford F-150. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the patrol’s Granville post at 740-587-0787.

This was to be Brian’s second time participating in Pelotonia. From his rider page:

This will be my second year participating in this great event. I am an avid cyclist that is glad that I have the opportunity to ride for such a great cause.  I am fortunate enough to ride for one amazingly strong man and one incredibly courageous young man this year.

The first is my father, Dave.  He has been battling Multiple Myeloma this year and has completed some major hurdles over the past several months.  He gains strength and confidence each day and I am confident that we’ll get him back to normal very soon.

The second is the son of our close family friends, Tyler, who was diaganosed with leukemia a few months ago.  This young man has shown great resolve and strength that a 12 year old should not have to display…..yet, his tough personality and character can’t be beaten by this horible disease.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.

I look forward to the challenging 100 miles this year.  I know that our efforts will only increase the odds of someday achieving the goal of a cancer free world.

I greatly appreciate your donation to this worthy fight!
