Acen (bottom) and Apio (top) Akello the morning before their sepA surgical team made up of more than 30 specialists participated in the successful separation of conjoined twin girls last week at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

We’re only now finding out about Thursday’s 17-hour procedure that parted 11-month old Acen and Apio of Uganda.

The girls, joined at the pelvic and hip area at birth, have been at Children’s since December.

The hospital says that 1 in 200,000 pregnancies results in conjoined twins. Since 1978, Children’s has successfully separated four pairs of twins including Acen and Apio.

The girls will require additional surgery, but doctors are hopeful that they’ll be able to go home sooner rather than later.

“The girls will continue to receive treatment at this time, and I can’t wait to watch them grow. My hope is that they will be able to sit up on their own, walk and play like any other child.”
