Could ‘SmartLane’ rescue I-670 E rush hour gridlock?
The summer of 2018 will come with some more road construction which will definitely be a huge pain in your ass but you may want to hold your tongue because the end game could be a game changer.
Next summer, the Ohio Department of Transportation will start work on a ‘SmartLane’ which is a fancy term for an extra lane along the left shoulder of I-670 east to help alleviate traffic congestion during the weekday rush hours between 3:30- 6:30pm.
The lane will begin at the Fourth Street exit downtown and go through I-270, reports 10TV.
The ‘SmartLane’ will be pimped out with digital message boards overhead that will appear every three-quarters of a mile. They’ll display messages about openings, closures, accidents, and when speed reductions are in place (slower speeds keep traffic moving during congestion).
All roads will remain open throughout the construction and most of the work will be done at night. This pilot project is expected to be completed in 2019.
