8 enchanting castles a moat’s float from Columbus
Time travel is still hard but you can take a step back into yesteryear at one of the many enchanting castles in central Ohio and around the Buckeye State.
From AA, to hauntings, to beautiful gardens here are eight history-soaked castles we were absolutely enamored by:
Schwartz Castle
492 S 3rd St, Columbus
The Schwartz Castle at 492 S. Third St in German Village, was built in the 1880’s by Frederick William Schwartz, an apothecary who lived there until he died there in 1914 at age 78.
Rumor has it the joint is haunted but don’t go poking around inside because it’s a private residency now.
Piatt Castles
Mac-A-Cheek Castle: 10051 Township Road 47, West Liberty
Mac-O-Chee Castle: 2319 State Route 287. West Liberty
1 hour from Columbus
Like the Mecoche division of the Shawnee people who occupied the land before them, the Piatts treasure the resources and the spirit of the valley they call home. In the 1820’s, Judge Benjamin M. and Elizabeth Barnett Piatt moved their family from Cincinnati to the rolling hills of Logan County.
Two of their children, Abram Sanders and Donn later built their own homes, Mac-A-Cheek and Mac-O-Chee in the country-side they knew as youths. These unique structures have become a private, family-owned museum that interprets over 200 years of history of the Ohio land and Ohio people.
General admission and Halloween-themed visits available.
