Downtown development claims another pawn, literally

A downtown storefront staple for seven decades will be closing this spring amid “aggressive development.”

Uncle Sam’s Pawn Shop, located at 225 E Main St, will close on April 15 and be handed over to developers interested in the increasingly popular part of town.

It opened in 1949 in its original location at 314 E. Main St.

The current owners, Bettye Jane Klinger and her sister Cathy Zweig, have been running the shop since their father, Gary Chasin, passed three years ago. Chasin operated the business with his father, Irving Chasin, until he passed away in 2010.

The sisters told The Dispatch they carried on their father’s legacy as long as they could.

According to The Dispatch, Gary Chasin would buy items from customers with no intention of reselling them, but simply to help them out of financial troubles.

The Uncle Sam’s property is being marketed by NAI Ohio Equities for $1.5 million.

Next door, the Meat Packers Outlet at 317 S 5th St. announced its closure.

Dave Anderson and his AB Partners who are building 120 apartments at 195 E Main St made the Meat Packers purchase. They have not yet announced plans for the property.
