A Pelotonia bicyclist on a training ride to raise funds for innovative cancer research was hit and killed this morning in Delaware County.

“It is with the deepest sadness that Pelotonia faces the loss of Michael Tighe, a first-year member of our community, a cancer survivor, oncology nurse, husband, father, and friend to many,” wrote Pelotonia President and CEO, Doug Ulman on Facebook.

The fatal crash happened at approximately 6:23 AM on US 36/ SR 37 near North Old State Road in Berlin Township, according to the Delaware Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, per 10TV.

OSHP says the 39-year-old was riding his bicycle westbound on the right berm of US 36 / SR 37 when a 29-year-old woman driving a blue 2011 Honda Accord, also heading westbound, went across the right white-edge line, striking Tighe and his bicycle. Tighe was pronounced deceased on the scene, reports NBC4i.

Authorities investigated for more than two hours after the crash. Neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected to be a factor, according to 10TV. Tighe was wearing a helmet. No charges have been filed.
