Grow a beard and make a difference

Grow a beard and make a difference

If we know one thing about 2020, it’s that many men embraced the beard and all it has to offer.

Whether you grew a beard or not, it won’t go to complete waste—and now you have an excuse to keep it a little bit longer.

This year marks the Butterfly Guild of Nationwide Children’s Hospital 10th annual NovemBEARD. A month-long endeavor starting Nov. 1, where men in our community can grow their beard to make a difference for the families in Hospice and Palliative Care at Nationwide Children’s.

The program provides services to children and families, either in the hospital or in their homes, with the goal of helping patients achieve the best possible quality of life. This team of experts provides families with support, counseling, and world-class care to ensure that a child receives the necessary care and comfort when faced with a life-threatening and/or life-limiting condition.

NovemBEARD was created in 2011 by co-founder David Rhodeback and several Nationwide Insurance associates.

“At the time, NovemBEARD was a small group of like-minded Nationwiders who wanted to get involved and make a difference in their community,” says former Butterfly Guild Board Member and Nationwide associate, Lindsey Escaja.

In their first year, NovemBEARD raised over $1,500 with approximately 50 bearders and supporters. Since then, NovemBEARD went on to raise more than $176,000 with hundreds of participants for the Hospice & Palliative Care Program in their first year and the amounts just continued to grow from there.

NovemBEARD’s success continued to grow through its partnership with the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Women’s Auxillary, Butterfly Guild. “This partnership continues to be a great example of men and women working together to benefit children for whom a cure is beyond reach and a great example of the community coming together to help some of our local families who need it the most right now, ” Escaja said.

The success of NovemBEARD over the years can also be attributed to the numerous Central Ohio businesses and organizations who have partnered to make a difference for the Hospice & Palliative Care Program including Cliff Original, Fado Irish Pub, North High Brewing, Holy Moses Hair, Wine on High, Thug Life Shirts and Elevator Brewing.
