Broadcaster Mikaela Hunt turns a positive test into a positive act
What do you do when your job is to report the news and you find yourself in the middle of something newsworthy? If you’re Mikaela Hunt, you report on yourself.
Show host on 610WTVN and former NBC4 television anchor Mikaela Hunt has tested positive for COVID-19, but her commitment to the job has not wavered. She is documenting her experience with the disease on Twitter and has opened up with us here at (614) Media.
“I want people to know that this can look very basic at the beginning,” she said. “You may not even suspect that you have COVID, but you do.”
Hunt herself thought she was dealing with a simple case of allergies last Tuesday and only became concerned Saturday night when she began to develop chills and discovered she had also lost her sense of smell.

“[Husband Marcus Thorpe] brought me from the pantry a bottle of apple cider vinegar, and I took a deep breath in, and I could feel the burning in my nostrils, but I literally couldn’t smell the product,” Hunt said.
Out of an abundance of caution, she went to be tested Sunday morning and has been quarantining in a guest bedroom in the basement ever since. From there, she has been Facetiming her husband and two sons, Logan age 10, and Christian age 8.
“Yesterday was the first day of school so I feel real bad that I wasn’t able to be involved.”
As for how she contracted COVID-19, Hunt isn’t sure. She has been masking up and observing other social distancing guidelines when she’s been out in the community.
“Thank goodness I was not running a bunch of errands Tuesday through Saturday when I thought I had allergies and I was sneezing,” she said. “That’s what I’m concerned about—the folks who might be thinking they have a cold, that they have an allergy. If you are out, even if you are masked and you’re out, what are you spreading?”
Hunt can be found on Twitter here, and she’s graciously encouraged those with questions to ask.
