Hidden Gems: Mohican State Park

Sarah Sole

Welcome to Hidden Gems, the monthly series in which we share the best places for weekend getaways. We know you’re having some wanderlust, but there’s so much magic to be seen in and around Ohio. Stick with us, and we’ll show you where to go to make the most of your weekend.

Take a trip with us, Columbus.

From campgrounds, to cabins, to resort lodges, you have a plethora of options for how to overnight at Mohican State Park

If you have the time, it might be good to give this trip a couple of days, because there’s just so much to do: There’s hiking, hunting, mountain biking, fishing, and horseback riding, for starters.

To get a good taste of the Greater Mohican Area, you can plan to visit during Mohican Wildlife Weekend, from April 23-25. The three-day event is packed with activities for every level of adventurer: You can register online to pick wildflowers at Fowlers Woods, explore the basics of backpacking at Gorman Nature Center, or take part in some BB Gun Range Shooting at Pleasant Hill Lake Park—and that’s just a small sampling of the event calendar. Many of the events are also free. They’re size-restricted though, for COVID-19 safety.

Also—and we cannot stress this enough—you could receive up to five pins by participating in specially selected programs. There’s even a walking stick medallion for going on specially selected hikes.

We get excited about swag, okay? We never met a hiking patch we didn’t like.
