Come try zucchini ice cream and a zucchini IPA at this annual Obetz festival

Jack McLaughlin

Sure, you’ve heard of zucchini fries. But what about zucchini fudge and zucchini beer?

The Obetz Zucchinifest will have all these products and many, many more when the yearly event takes place Sept. 3 through Sept. 6.

Held at Fortress Obetz (2015 Recreation Trail), the widely-attended festival is now in its 35th year of celebrating—you guessed it—the mighty zucchini.

And according to Obetz Mayor Angela Kirk, the village of Obetz is not playing around with their zucchini-related rules, either.

“Any vendor that we want to have, we require them to offer at least two different preparations of Zucchini,” She said.

While a full list of these offerings is coming soon, we’re already privy to one of the most exciting: a hazy IPA with real zucchini from nearby BrewDog. The beer is known as Summer Squash, and will be sold exclusively at this year’s festival.

According to Kirk, another vendor will be offering waffle sandwiches with zucchini ice cream.

And even though it’s the wild and unusual products that generally catch the most attention, a classic zucchini preparation is regarded as one of the hallmarks of the festival.

“Zucchini bread,” Kirk said. “Every year it flies off the vendor tables like hot cakes, or like hot zucchini bread.” The village will be partnering with a local bakery who will craft 5,000 loaves of the bread. And even with these numbers, it’s not expected to stick around for long.

The event is also home to a variety of free entertainment sources as well, including a car show and three nights of free live music from bands like Big & Rich, Ezra Ray Hart, and Winger.

You can find a full schedule, as well as a list of every musical act performing, here.

And while you’re at it, make room for some zucchini bread. You’re probably going to need it.
