You’d never guess these cinnamon rolls are gluten-free

Once a month, a cleaning crew comes through The Dipped Donut in Delaware (located at 256 S. Sandusky St.), and nothing is spared. Every surface, every piece of equipment, from oven to utensil, is professionally wiped clean.

“We get it all. The duct work. The floors. Everything,” said owner Jeni Reida.

This all happens because once a month, the Delaware Donut shop closes for an entire day to produce their now-iconic gluten free donuts and cinnamon rolls. This service—which has become so popular that they’ve resorted to take-and-bake sales to offer the best possible volume—is revered as one of the absolute best-tasting gluten-free items in all of Columbus. People simply cannot get enough.

“We’ve only been doing it for about 19 months, but the feedback we’ve had is incredible,” Reida said.

Their secret? It all starts with the type of gluten-free flour used. The Dipped Donut relies on a unique blend of tapioca starch that, while pricey, mimics the flavors and textures of real flour better than any substitute they’ve come across.

“We’re considered the Cinnabon of gluten-free cinnamon rolls; that’s what our consistency is like. If I was to feed one to you right now without you know, you would have zero idea it was gluten-free.” She said.

Closing for an entire day to produce gluten free donuts. Extensive cleaning. Shelling out on expensive high-end flour. You’d think there has to be some serious motivation behind the lengths The Dipped Donut goes to preserve quality and prevent cross-contamination. And you’d be right.

Although now in her twenties, the daughter of Jeni and Carl Reida was eight years old when the Delaware business owners discovered she had Celiac disease. And ever since, the family has been perfecting their gluten-free cinnamon roll recipe. For holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions, Jeni and Carl would always produce the speciality baked goods for their daughter (and the rest of the family). And this experience is likely one of the reasons they’re so sought-after today.

“It really is uncommon to get gluten-free cinnamon rolls that taste like normal cinnamon rolls, but we handle all of our products like that person has Celiac, because that’s what we would want for our daughter,” Jeni Reida said. “And having that perspective really helps us make the best possible gluten-free food.”

Even though cinnamon rolls are their main attraction, The Dipped Donut produces more than just these gooey delights for their loyal gluten-free following. Using their dedicated gluten-free fryer, Reida and her staff will spend a large portion of Sunday evening and all day Monday making not only cinnamon rolls, but also a variety of donuts.

“We try to keep the gluten-free menu close to what a customer would see if they came in on any other day,” she said.

This includes offering a variety of options, from more standard donuts to flavors like maple bacon and Fruity Pebbles. The Delaware donut shop also features holiday packs, and will be producing Easter-themed donuts with their next gluten-free run. They’ll generally bake up a batch of gluten-free dinner rolls on production days.

According to Reida, exactly which Monday each month The Dipped Donut will turn into gluten-free Monday is less of a science, having more to do with how individual schedules come together. This month, they’ll be offering gluten-free donuts and cinnamon rolls on March 22.

You can order up to six days ahead of time by visiting their website or calling 740-957-8100, with pickup taking place from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on gluten-free Mondays. With demand being so high, all sales are done on a preorder basis, meaning you must order ahead of time.

But don’t worry, according to Reida, you can order however many you’d like.
