This Columbus speakeasy is hosting a boozy, adult spelling bee

In honor of the 94th annual Scripps Spelling Bee finals, which are taking place today, one Columbus speakeasy is hosting its own adult version of the event.

Only this one is a little lighter on the rules, and a lot heavier on the booze.

Sotto Terra, the newly-opened speakeasy located on the basement level of The Sanctuary on Neil, will host the Boozy Bee Spelling Bee on July 7.

“There’s something about a spelling bee that brings back the nostalgia of childhood,” said owner of Sotto Terra Keith Michael in a press release. “We wanted to give Columbus the opportunity to embrace their childlike spirit but do it with a fun, adult twist!”

The event will operate similarly to a normal spelling bee, with contestants attempting to spell (alcohol-related) words onstage. The contest will be single elimination format, with the winner taking home $100.

Registration, which is free, can be completed here until June 30. The public is welcome to watch the event as well.
