The Weekender: Breakfast Burritos

Alyson Strickler-Vazquez

Breakfast burritos are the epitome of hearty breakfast fare: The ideal combination of eggs, protein, and all the trimmings hit the spot during these cold winter months. This filling dish is a perfect way to fuel up before a long day of skiing, shopping, or even an afternoon nap. These three restaurants have focused on the breakfast burrito trifecta– premium ingredients, flavor, and sauce–so I recommend hitting one of these spots before the next wintery mix sends you into hibernation.

101 Beer Kitchen’s burrito came out of left field. I was left reeling and begging the chef for details on the ranchero sauce; my husband was left hungry as I ate his entire breakfast. 101’s barbacoa Breakfast Burrito is a flavor bomb. The from-scratch kitchen shreds tender barbacoa and encases it in a humongous flour tortilla with Latin spices, scrambled eggs, black bean and corn salsa, and cheddar cheese. The burrito, served sizzling in a cast-iron skillet, is topped with sour cream and jalapeños and surrounded by a pool of ranchero sauce. This sauce is drinkable: roasted tomatoes, onions, and chilis. The entire meal transported me to a cattle ranch in Texas with cast-iron cooking over a campfire.

Must-haves – Low Country Breakfast- YUM! Bring a friend and order one of each.

Hangover Easy is a wacky adventure that should include a table of your closest friends. The restaurant’s marking department is making their mark with colorful food descriptions and laugh-out-loud innuendos. Did I mention the food is also great? Its The Dirty will cure any late-night hangover. A brunch spectacular with scrambled eggs, chorizo, fries, and queso, all wrapped tight in a flour tortilla and crowned with house-made pico de gallo, shaved cheddar cheese, and silky crema. The Dirty is the epitome of a craveable college guilty pleasure.

Must-haves – Bloody Maria- Bloody Mary’s better cousin that is made with tequila

Emmett’s Cafe is fast becoming a Columbus favorite, recently opening a second location at Open Air. Emmett’s breakfast burrito gets creative, filling a tortilla with tater tots, avocado, prosciutto, and chipotle aioli in addition to the more common scrambled eggs and jack cheese. This burrito is bursting at the seams and served with chunky house-made salsa. A big bite is required because you want to get the fluffy tots, salty prosciutto, velvety avocado, and creamy aioli into each bite. The chipotle aioli pairs well with the salsa and gives enough kick while cutting through the layers of generous ingredients.

A breakfast burrito can be a significant undertaking, especially served in these sizes. The secret is the leftovers are even better the next day!
