New Indoor Pool & Aquatic Center Comes to Powell

Ohio ranks 7th in the nation for drowning related deaths in pools, and the Karrs are making a big splash in their community by changing this statistic with their new facility, Powell Aquatics Center, and their swimming school, Buckeye Swim School.

This new facility with a 25-yard, 5-lane indoor pool, is now open, and the expert swim instructors are excited to teach children and adults the importance of knowing how to swim, re-orient yourself in water, tread water, and other water-related survival skills.

Laurie Karr, a former member of Ohio State’s Swim Team and a previous coach of 30 years for the Buckeye Swim Team, and her husband, Rick, opened this aquatic center with the goal to expand swimming skills in Powell and the surrounding communities. “Every year, we hear about heartbreaking accidental drownings in Central Ohio that could have been prevented with lessons in basic water competency,” says co-owner Rick Karr.

Buckeye Swim School, open to babies, toddlers, children, and adults, will utilize the Starfish Institute’s Learn-to-Swim curriculum, which focuses on developing a foundation of swimming and safety skills with a focus on self-rescue. Their priority is for students to feel comfortable in the water. They also offer fun & fitness classes, competitive swimming options, private lessons, and adapted lessons for students with disabilities.

The Powell Aquatics Center is inclusive and open to everyone of different swimming backgrounds and capabilities. It’s located at 168 E. Olentangy St. and open daily from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Check out more of their curriculum, pricing, and schedule a lesson by going to their website, or feel free to call 740-324-7946 for more information.
