Columbus speakeasy to host boozy spelling bee

Jack McLaughlin

Spelling the word “abecedarian” sober is one thing. Spelling it after you’ve had a few drinks is something else entirely.

You’ll be able to try your hand at both when the Columbus speakeasy Sotto Terra hosts another installment of its popular boozy spelling bee series next month.

On March 23 at 7 p.m., the Boozy Bee Adult Spelling Bee Contest will kick off. The event will operate like the booze-less bees most of us are used to: Each contestant will receive a word, and those who recite theirs correctly will continue to spell another round. Those who don’t are out of the tournament.

To stay on theme, all words will be alcohol-related.

“Our past two Boozy Bees were so successful, we’re bringing it back,” said Keith Michael, owner of Sotto Terra in a press release. “There’s something about a spelling bee that brings back the nostalgia of childhood. We want to give Columbus the opportunity to embrace their childlike spirit but do it with a fun, adult twist!”

Sotto Terra will award the winner $100. There is a $10 cover charge for the event, but all Sotto Terra visitors will be invited to watch the bee. Participants must register by March 20.
