80 year old Columbus festival is all about beans – and it’s coming this weekend

There’s an 80 year old tradition in the Hilltop that pays homage to Columbus’ complicated West Side history while simultaneously bringing the community together…and beans are the main attraction.

Westgate Park, once known as Camp Chase, was the home of a Civil War training camp and later, a Confederate prison. During our country’s divisive past, the only reliable, steady meal the 150,000 Union soldiers had to eat at Camp Chase was, you guessed it, beans.

The annual Hilltop Bean Dinner Festival is this Saturday, June 24th, 10am-5pm, at 455 S. Westgate Ave. Hosted by Hilltop’s Business Association, this dinner and family-friendly festival is meant to “unite people from all around Columbus in one day of music, a variety of food, arts, and crafts vendors, and an antique car show.” And, of course, hundreds of pounds of the infamous beans will be the star of the show, cooked right there in the park, among other dishes for guests.
